Microsoft Edge is blocking downloads of Office files

A new feature in Microsoft Edge allows you to open Office files within your web browser. This feature is currently not compatible with Blackboard.

If you click on a link to an Office file in Blackboard, it will fail with the following error:

Server Error 404 - File or directory not found. The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

Workarounds

Either use a different browser until this problem is resolved, or switch the feature off in Edge by following these steps:

  1. Click the … menu at the top right of the browser
  2. Click Settings
  3. Click Downloads
  4. Switch the Open Office files in the browser feature to off.

  1. A fix for this was released in a recent update to Edge (v98.0.1108.50).

    If you applied the workaround listed above, you can follow the steps again and switch the option back on if required.
